An Introduction to the
production of polymer-modified Bitumen (PmB) using IKA®
machines.
Polymer Modified Bitumen - BitumenEmulsion
Where is PmB used?
For very
highly stressed surfaces in road and airportconstruction
For mineral
aggregates with unfavourable adhesive properties
In case
of open-pored asphalt layers
Wher else is PmB used?
For the production of high-quality
roofing-cardboard and damp-proof layers
What is polymer-modified bitumen?
Polymer modified bitumen (PmB) are
produced mixtures from:
bitumen
polymers
in which the polymers are changing the elasto-voscous behaviour
of the bitumen and thus make this binder more suitable for
special stress.
Where are the advantages when
using PmB?
higher cohesion and better adhesion to mineral aggregates
larger
range of plasticity(temperature range between breaking
point and fusion point)
great elastic
recovery after relief
higher
fatigue resistance
What is bitumen?
Bitumen are meltable
hydrocarbon mixtures of high molecular weight and dark colour,
which are produced from mineral oil.

Bitumen
Bitumen
is the binder used in asphalt. It covers the other mineral
aggregates,supplies stability and gives the
asphaltthe requested properties.
Asphalt
consists of bitumen and sand resp. grit
Asphalt is produced in asphalt mixing plants by processing
of the differentmineral aggregates in graded
cornsize distribution with bitumen as binder.
What are polymers?
Polymers
are chemicalcompounds from chains or branched molecules
(macromolecules) con-sisting of same units or units of
same kind (theso-called monomers).
For modified bitumen mainly the following
polymers are used:
SBS - styrene-butadiene-styrene-copolymer
EVA - ethylene-vinyl acetate-copolymer
How is PmB produced?
The Bitumen DISPAX®“ resulted from a combination
of MHD and DR.
